Tony Fadell: The first secret of design is noticing?

We, as humans, are used to adapting to new things very quickly. This is because we have a limited brain potential; and our brain cryptography the things we do into habits so that more space is made for new things. This process is called habituation.

Our brain constantly habituating can both be good and bad. If we were to notice every little detail, it will be exhausting, but in the same time if we forget to notice those details which may turn out to be problems that we face, it can be a really bad thing.

Due to this process of habituation, it is the designers’, innovators’ and entrepreneurs’ job to experience those things and improve them for the rest of the people in the world.

Some people believe that only some people are born with this ability, to see things that others don’t notice, as if they are genetically engineered to do so from birth. The innovators in the apple company have practiced a unique routine where they review them inventions like customers. This is to allow the innovators to focus on the possible frustrations and small details that can improve the product. This practice further proves that this belief is false as it shows that we just have to see things from another point of view.

Tony fadell tells us that habituation can be avoided by a few things such as looking broader, looking closer to the details and thinking younger where we allow ourselves to brainstorm in unique ways just like the youths. Tony also emphasizes on the fact that we should always be beginners as it will allow us to keep trying new things.

In conclusion, I do agree with tony fadell on constantly trying new things as it will better our lifestyle and the world. I feel that nowadays some people invent new products just to gains popularity, rather than trying to improve things that are already exist and better the world.
